Converting from @Home.com to @Shaw.ca

You can configure your email program to allow you to access both your existing @home.com email address and your new @shaw.ca email address. To do this, you must create a new account.

Chances are you'll already have your existing @home.com email account configured into your email program, so you have two options:

Create a new account
Modify your existing e-mail account information

OUTLOOK EXPRESS:

Launch Outlook Express
Select Help -> About Outlook Express from the menu bar
A window will appear displaying the version of Outlook Express you're running

NETSCAPE MESSENGER/NAVIGATOR

Launch Netscape Messenger
Select Help -> About Netscape Communicator from the menu bar
A window will appear displaying the version of Netscape Messenger you're running

1. Create a New Account

Outlook Express 5/6:

Open Outlook Express
Click the Tools menu
Select Accounts
Click Add, then click Mail
Type the name in Display name as you want it to appear in the Email From: field
Click Next
Enter your Email address (your username@shaw.ca)
Click Next
Confirm the Incoming mail server is set to POP3
Set Incoming mail (POP3) server to shawmail
Set Outgoing mail (SMTP) server to shawmail
Click Next
The Account name field displays the Email username (whatever appears before @shaw.ca in your email address)
Enter your @shaw.ca email account password in the Password field (displays as *********)
Click a checkmark in the Remember password box
Ensure that Secure Password Authentication is NOT checked
Click Next
Click Finish
Click Close to return to Outlook Express

2. Modify Existing Account:

If you no longer wish to use your @home email account, you can modify your existing @home email account settings. Open your email program's configuration window and change the following settings:

Username: change your username to what appears before @shaw.ca
in your new email address
Password: change your password to what you specified when you created your @shaw.ca email account
Incoming (POP3) mail server: change to shawmail
Outgoing (SMTP) mail server: change to shawmail

3. Netscape Messenger 4.5

Note: Prior to creating a new User Profile for your @shaw.ca email account, we recommend that you back up any existing profile information. Profile information can include bookmarks, email messages and your address book for each User Profile you have set up in Netscape Communicator.

Saving your existing User Profiles:

Click on the Start button
Select Find Files or Search
Select For Files or Folders… from the sub-menu.This will open the Search window
In the Named or Search for files or folders named field, type users
In the Look In field, ensure that it says Local Hard Drive(s)
Click on the Find or Search Now button
In the Right Hand Portion of the search window, double click on the Users folder. This should display a list of folders with the same names as your existing Netscape Profile names
Right Click on the folder with the same name as your @home.com profile and select Copy
(The name of this profile can be obtained by starting Netscape normally and viewing the list of your existing User Profiles as listed in the Profile Manager window)
Close the Find Files or Folders window
Right click on a blank portion of the desktop and select Paste. This should place a copy of the selected "User Profile Folder" on the desktop.

To configure your new @shaw.ca email account in Netscape Communicator 4.51: Ensure that Netscape Communicator is closed, as you will not be able to create a new User Profile if it is running

Click Start -> Programs -> Netscape Communicator 4.51 -> Utilities -> User Profile Manager
Select New
Select Next
Enter your name as you would like it to appear in the From: field of any email messages you send
Type your @shaw.ca email address
Select Next
The Profile Name field displays your email account username. Rename the profile to Shaw Email to make it easy to identify and to ensure that your @shaw.ca account profile has a different name than your @home.com account profile. Note: If you don't provide a different name for your @shaw.ca profile, your account information including bookmarks, email messages and your address book will be overwritten.

Select Next again
Type shawmail in the Outgoing mail (SMTP) server: field
Type the first portion of your @shaw.ca email address in the Mail server user name: field
Type shawmail in the Incoming Mail Server: field
Ensure that POP3 is selected as the Mail Server type
Select Next
Type shawnews in the News (NNTP) server: field
Select Finish
Netscape Communicator will launch
To access Messenger, select Communicator -> Messenger from Communicator's menu bar

Alternatives:

Create your own e-mail address from your own domain name - e.g. register the website address "www.ingenius.bc.ca" so you can receive e-mail at the address "inge@ingenius.bc.ca".

One great place for this type of service is SearchBC.com - not only can you register domain names for only $25.50CDN (+GST) per year, but you can also setup and manage your free POP mail account and e-mail aliases.

How does it work? First you must register your website address via SearchBC.com, then go to http://hosting.searchbc.com/domainmgr/ to manage your account. Now follow the instructions to set up your POP mail account. A SearchBC.Com POP mail account is an email box that allows you to receive email sent to your domain name. This is separate from your existing ISP, dialup or web-mail account email.

You can also use e-mail aliases to forward all your e-mail to one account.
An email alias is like a forwarding service. You are able to receive email sent to addresses at your domain name and send email from addresses at your domain name using your existing dialup, web-mail or POP mail account. It's a lot easier than it sounds! When you send a request to SearchBC.Com to have an email alias(s) to be setup (ie. info@yourname.com) you will be required to provide us with the name(s) of your existing dialup, web-mail or POP mail account(s) to which you would like mail sent to info@yourname.com to be delivered. When someone sends email to info@yourname.com, all you will need to do is get your email as usual. The email sent to email aliases at your domain name will be in your email software Inbox.

To send email using an email alias (ie. info@yourname.com) all you need to do is change the "from address" in your email software to the email alias name you have chosen to send from. Each email alias can be forwarded to a different dialup, web-mail or POP mail account (ie. info@yourname.com could be sent to yourname@yourISP.com; the address help@yourname.com could be sent to yourname@anotherISP.com.
